The 6 Best Wet Cat Food Flavors for 2019 As Chosen By Cats

What do cats consider the best wet cat food?

© Olga Sapegina | Dreamstime.com

My cats and I are always surprised when we look at the best wet cat food reviews online because the reviewers never seem to mention food the cats who live here like and are willing to eat.

Not that my cats are especially picky. They just like to eat the way cats are supposed to eat.

To our way of thinking, the best wet cat food mimics their natural diet. That natural diet would consist of one protein source per meal -- usually, a mouse or a bug -- not a hodgepodge of ingredients. And a cat's natural diet is meat the cat tears with his teeth, not gooey mush.

"All natural" isn't necessarily a strong selling point for us because I'm not sure how natural any food made in a factory is. But when I'm shopping for the best wet cat food for my cats, I do pay close attention to the ingredients, the texture and the packaging. I also try to think about sustainability and the manufacturer's carbon footprint.

How I Choose The Best Wet Food For My Cats

When I shop for cat food, I look for pouches and tubs because I worry about the lining in cans. I also look for food that has just one or two protein sources that are named on the label.

If the food is called Salmon, I want it to contain just salmon, not salmon, chicken, tuna and whatever else the manufacturer can come up with to boost the protein content.

Ingredients I avoid are wheat gluten, peas and pea protein, rice and pasta, potatoes and sweet potatoes, vegetables and other unnecessary extras. Cats need protein from meat, not grain. And the carbohydrates in grains can quickly lead to obesity.

The Best Wet Cat Food

So here are our choices for the best wet cat food flavors. Some might surprise you because they're not on other reviewers' lists, and some are made by Purina. Not many of us consider Purina a high-end super premium manufacturer. But they do know how to make wet food cats like and are willing to eat.

These opinions are mine and my cats'. I paid for the food myself and did not receive samples from manufacturers.

Muffitt's favorite: Natural Tuna Recipe
* Purina Muse tubs contain only the protein sources named on the label.
* The liquid, and there's lots, is fish or chicken broth with no wheat gluten.
*The meat is chewable shreds, so cats can use their teeth the way they're designed to be used -- to tear meat.
* A tub is about the right portion for one meal. It might not be enough for some cats.
* I like the plastic tubs, so I don't have to worry about the lining in cans.
Warning Always look at the ingredients in your cats' food. Some of the Purina Muse cans contain sweet potatoes. Your cats don't need sweet potatoes and probably shouldn't have them.
These are the ingredients in the Natural Tuna recipe.
